Every parent knows that there is just something SO sweet and special about 6 month old babies. This age is a wonderful time to capture them with a milestone photography session! So much has changed since their newborn photos. Around this time, babies are:

  • Sit up, or almost! (with a little help from mom and dad)
  • Practicing their tummy time, showing off those chubby little arms
  • Rolling on their back and grabbing their toes
  • Gummy smiles
  • Pudgy hands 🥹 a personal favorite of mine to photograph!!
  • Smiles and giggles

At 6 months old, a photo session is a lot easier than newborn photos – baby has longer wake and feeding windows, is more interested in interacting with parents and siblings, and we can always manage some perfect smiling at the camera shots!

Where to take your 6 month baby photos

At Home

I am always a fan of photo sessions in your home! It’s where your child is growing up, where every room and piece of furniture is becoming nostalgic with memories. Whether I’m coming to your home for a newborn session or a milestone session, we will spend the most time in the rooms with the most natural light – whether that is your living room, nursery, or main bedroom. Photos at home often take place in the chair you feed your baby… the couch on which you’ve shared many contact naps and on the floor that you’ve worked on tummy time together. Don’t feel any pressure about your home not being “perfect” enough to photograph!

In Studio

If the thought of having photos taken in your home is overwhelming or stressful, utilizing a local studio is a great option! I have a few studios around Minneapolis that I love, so please reach out if you would like more information about studio 6 month baby photos. The perks of photographing in a studio are neutral backgrounds and furniture, and no clean up time needed! Most parents opt to wait to change their baby and/or older children into their photo outfits until they arrive at the studio – I recommend this to avoid spit up or a spilled snack ruining the outfits you so carefully planned!

What to Wear for 6 Month Baby Photo Session

As a newborn and family photographer, I will always recommend the same types of clothing –

  1. Keep it neutral or soft. Neutral colors like white, of white, beige, tan, and gray photograph beautifully. The main reason we love neutral colors for photography is that is reflects beautifully onto your skin. Wearing bright, bold colors like hot pink can cause color cast – which means there would be a pink “cast” on your neck, chin or your baby’s face, if you chose to wear a really bright, saturated color. If you would like to wear color, do it! Just keep it to softer shades – earth tones, pastels, soft patterns like florals are also beautiful. Check out some visual examples on my Pinterest board.
  2. Be comfortable. Choose textures and cuts that are comfortable for you baby, older children and yourself! We want you to be able to cuddle, play, and spend time in front of the cameras without feeling itchy or stiff. Babies and toddlers always do better when they feel comfortable in their clothing, too!
  3. For baby — consider an outfit that shows off their 6 month baby thighs, toes, arms, etc. A little pair of overalls, a simple onesie, or a special floral romper.

As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I offer 6 month milestone sessions as part of my First Year Collection. I also offer them as standalone sessions throughout the year. You can inquire about available dates by contacting me!
